What is the Future of Hot Rodding?

I was pondering this the other day when I was cut off by an Import car that could have been mistaken for the space ship from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The car had underbody lighting, blinding H.I.D. headlights, and gauges straight from the cockpit of an F-16. Speaking of fighter jets, this thing looked ready for take off with it laughably large spoiler. Now don't get me wrong, I am all for automotive customizing, but how hard is it to weld on a body kit? I fear all the creativity has made like Elvis, and left the building. But what has left the import crowd in body modification ingenuity, they have more than made up for in enthusiasm. Are these the modern day Hot Rodder's? But I ask, how long will these fads last?

A long time ago, or at least before my time, modifying vans with sweet murals of everything from cheesy graphics of wolves, to intergalactic battle scenes was all the rage. People were putting wicker furniture, shag carpet, and swivel captains chairs in the automotive equivalent of a cardboard box. Those days are long gone, but every once in a while you will see one prowling the streets, a former shell of itself.

Will future generations look back on the winged wonder Civics and Eclipse's with fondness, and a need to recreate those times, like the Hot Rod is revered today? Or will they go the way of vans driven by creepy guys with bad mustaches? Only time will tell. Now it may seem harsh to compare import tuning to Vanning, but let's face the facts, some of the thing the tuners do, will probably be pretty cheesy in several years. I have a gut feeling, 40 years down the road, no one, and I mean no one will want a winged civic to relive their high school dream car.
